Welcome

Spring comes slowly, in fits and starts, in the Mount Washington Valley. Last week the strong spring sun made it warm enough to sit out on the deck for a few hours, but yesterday we had five inches of beautiful fresh snow.

Why this blog? Nearly three years ago, we bought a house at the edge of the White Mountain National Forest. Judging from the few plants in the original yard though, the house’s address could have been at a northern latitude just about anywhere on earth. That didn’t seem good to me. I wanted to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses which belong to this ecoregion and support its native plants and animals. I’d like us all to fit in.

So that’s what we did-lots of work over two springs and three falls taking out invasive and non-native plants, black mulch and gravel and planting trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses native to this region. Fortunately we took alot of pictures along the way. Our long winter this year offered me the opportunity to create this site, which is about what we did and why, and how others could add native plants to their gardens.

I plan to blog about the garden – how the new plants are doing and what new birds, butterflies, moths and caterpillars are stopping by on their migration, or breeding, and anything related to native gardening in this region. I hope you are interested, and if you are, please enter your name and email address on this page and you will be sent new blog postings. Happy spring!
